Minarets 01

The mosque, with its minarets, is a place of worship for Muslims. A minaret is a tower-shaped structure. It differs in style from the spiral minaret of Samarra, the Ottoman needle minarets of Istanbul to the familiar minarets of the Taj Mahal.

The minaret was originally the place where the call to prayer was given by the muezzin. Today it is often ornamental. Four is a holy number and many mosques have two or more minarets.

Muslim faith is based round the five pillars of Islam of which, prayer is the Second Pillar. Muslims can perform personal prayers at any occasion (du’a) and they are encouraged to perform Friday prayers, and Eid prayers etc.

Abu Dhabi has 2,289 Mosques and there are 5,000 mosques in the United Arab Emirates. They all have at least one minaret!

As a visitor, the sound of the muezzin calling the faithful to prayer and delivering his sermon from the minaret is one of the most eclectic memories of a visit to an Islamic country.
